Mobile Interaction with the Real World 2009

Welcome to the 4th workshop on Mobile Interaction with the Real World. The workshop invited papers which focus on new mobile and wearable input and output interfaces which allow simpler and straightforward interactions with mobile services and applications. An inherit problem of mobile HCI are the limited output and input capabilities of current mobile devices. This workshop continues a successful series of workshops that focus on new approaches to overcome these issues. Examples are the usage of external visual interfaces (e.g. projector phones, public displays, interactive surfaces) and additional input capabilities (e.g. gestures, on-body interfaces, pointing) and innovative feedback mechanisms (e.g. tactile feedback).

We received 23 submissions and selected ten contributions based on reviews from the organiser and the program committee. The program which features presentations of the accepted papers, a plenary discussion and a demo session is available. We invited the authors' of six accepted papers to publish an extended version in a special issue on Mobile Interaction with the Real World. The special issue will be part of the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction (IJMHCI) and is expected to be in print in the third quarter of 2010.

The workshop was successfully held on Tuesday September 15, 2009 at the University of Bonn in conjunction with Mobile HCI 2009. Some photos from the workshop are available on flickr and the accepted papers are available on the program page. The wokshop proceeding are published as a book with the ISBN 978-3-8142-2177-X. MIRW 2009 was supported by the European research project InterMedia.
